Nutritional Outlook
U.S. lawmakers in January introduced two congressional bills,
one in the Senate and one in the House, that aim to legalize industrial
hemp growing in the United States. If passed, the bills would remove
industrial hemp from the U.S. Controlled Substances Act list of Schedule
I drugs and widely enable legal, commercial industrial hemp agriculture
in the United States. Food, dietary supplement, and other hemp product
manufacturers would finally be able to source hemp ingredients
domestically. But for food and supplement firms using hemp seed
ingredients, there is still another piece to the puzzle, and that is
whether FDA considers hemp ingredients legal for use in dietary
supplements and food and beverages.
