NoCo Hemp Expo: Three can’t-miss highlights from the April 2015 event

Here are three highlights from the second annual NoCo Hemp Expo schedule:

• Author Doug Fine. A leading contemporary hemp academic and lifestyle practitioner, Fine is promoting his latest book, “First Harvest: Game on for the Hemp Industry.” The book is being printed on hemp-composite paper.
• Hemp sports car. As part of Renew Sports Cars’ goal to create 100 percent carbon-neutral automobiles, the Florida company is building vehicles with hemp composite frames that also run on hemp ethanol. Its rebuilt 1997 Miata will be on display at the expo.
• Hemp artists. Muralist Tommy Nahulu — well known for painting a beloved Johnny Cash mural on the east side of the bar at 314 E. 13th Ave., which stood there from shortly after the iconic Man in Black died in 2003 until that watering hole changed ownership and underwent rebranding in 2012 — will be among the artists painting or sketching on hemp canvas during the expo.

Yusuke Seki showcases fragile hemp textiles across banks of metal rods

The show celebrated the release of a new fabric made from woven hemp – a material made from cannabis plant fibres that was once widely used in Japanese garments, but saw a sharp decline after the prohibition of cannabis in the 1930s.

BC students develop environmental art

The pair proposed a process called phytoremediation, which uses different types of plants to remediate the soil. Amsden said plants such as common ragweed, sunflowers and even hemp and cannabis, can be used to draw out different toxins from the soil.

Hemp and Switchgrass Featured in Local Exhibit

An exhibit at the Drury on C-Street Gallery showcases the work of local paper sculpture artist Shirah Miriam "Mimi" Aumann who uses her work to send a message.  KSMU’s Michele Skalicky has more on the 44-piece multi-media environmental art exhibit, “Hemp and Pots—Grass and Trees.” ...

Aumann is an advocate for industrial hemp, and it shows particularly in two pieces:  “Hemp Can Save the Planet” and “Let Me Count the Ways.”  Aumann says the latter piece shows some of the many ways industrial hemp can be used.

"I took soy paste ink and mixed it with hemp oil and made some calligraphy inks so I could write on these circles of hemp.  And these darker circles, I've crushed hemp seed and put in the paper and so these are just many, many, many things that we can be making out of hemp," she said.

Drury on C-Street will open a unique exhibition featuring Missouri artist Shirah Miriam "Mimi" Aumann from 6 to 8 p.m. today. The exhibit, "Hemp and Pots – Grass and Trees" will feature 44 multi-media pieces, including the installation of "Tree Whispers," which portrays the deforestation of the Earth for paper. The Drury on C-Street gallery is at 233 E. Commercial St.
