Michigan approves industrial hemp research

In January 2015, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder signed Public Acts 547 and 548 of 2014, removing “industrial hemp” from the state’s legal definition of marijuana and authorizing industrial hemp research by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) and Michigan universities. The 2014 Farm Bill included conservative language in Sec. 7606, opening the door for such regulated research on the ancient fiber crop, though commercial cultivation remains illegal at the federal level. Michigan joins at least 10 other states that have passed similar legislation.

Growing hemp for research?

One of hemp's most promising properties appears to be its ability to get Democrats and Republicans to work together. Politicians in both the U.S. House and Senate have introduced legislation to pull industrial hemp out of the definition of marijuana under the Controlled Substances Act. The Senate version of the bill is co-sponsored by Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican from Kentucky.

Take time to educate yourself about hemp

I am a clothing designer here in Victoria, and the main material used in my clothing, Minawear Luxury Hemp Loungewear, is hemp and organic cotton. The reason I only design with hemp and organic cotton is that I believe our environment is in grave danger of becoming severely imbalanced by the overuse of chemicals, which affects humans on many levels - whether it be a rise in illnesses from water contamination or air and soil pollutants. 

Unlike conventional cotton that requires one-third of a pound of chemicals per T-shirt, hemp is grown without the use of harmful chemicals, and that is profitable to farmers as well as beneficial to the health of the planet.

It’s a far cry from Virginia’s traditional tight grip on hemp. Industrial hemp is banned across the country. Although some products are legal to sell in the United States, they are imported from overseas.

That represents a market of more than $500 million, according to the Virginia Industrial Hemp Coalition, which is based in Nelson County. Virginia could grab some of that market if hemp could be grown domestically.
